No understanding of letters is required. Children as young as two can use it, as they do not need to be able to read or spell.

There is one screen: a Phonemies keyboard. The Phonemies are a family of Speech Sound Monsters! Each one 'says' an English sound. There are 48 tiles to click. While the site is being built please visit the Speech Sound Play with Phonemies web site to sign up to access the tech!

Phonemies say the speech sounds children can't, or prefer not to. Children click the 'monsters' in the same order used in spoken words. When those speech sounds (phonemes) are blended together using our custom-built algorithm, the word appears on the screen, ready to be voiced.

If children aren't sure which Monster Sounds to click, their parents, speech therapists or teachers can help using the 'Check Word' feature. It shows which Phonemies to type for that word. They can also download the word using Map and Drag and print it off, so the child can use it as a reference and store it in their personal word bank.

Children can produce single words or whole sentences. They can say whatever they want (except for swear words — those aren’t in the word bank!). There are already 20,000 words in the MySpeekie® Word Bank, and we are adding new ones every day. Our ground-breaking algorithm can Code Map® all the words of English (that’s over a million words!) — we’ve cracked its opaque orthography.
